The Origin Story of “Looking Back”
When asked how the looking back concept originated during an Instagram Live interview with Jordan Scott (founder of idk tonight) our co-founder / lead editor Michael said this…
“I have epilepsy, so I have the memory of a goldfish, and in 2010 I actually purchased one of those Flip cams…”
“There were a lot of highlights to our wedding weekend and THIS is the one that everyone is still talking about…one of the really cool things about what you’re doing is [that] we’re the first generation who’s entire lives have really been documented…for the most part a lot of people now have all these incredible moments and memories that are just taking up Gigabytes of space on their phones that are not really ever going to see the light of day and don’t really have a great place to be surfaced and I think what you did is just so incredible which is creating a sharable enjoyable communal experience to really digest all this stuff and it’s awesome” -Nicholas

History
Our Looking Back films were originally created by Michael D. Fiore to fight epilepsy symptoms. The main one, memory loss. Documenting both the boring and exciting aspects of his life allowed Michael to remember everyday life.
Michael began shooting in 2011 with a Flip cam, recording his friends and family any chance he got.
Looking Backs also gave Fiore a chance to express himself freely and allowed him to see how far he could push his creativity.
Michael is an award winning rap artist professionally known as “FiO Baby”. He had released numerous mixtapes, performed on stages across Long Island and New York City, and took 2nd place on a hip hop reality show named Hip Hop ‘16 Bars”. Michael decided to use these Looking Back films to show the world who he truly is incorporating every aspect of himself, including rapping.
As he aimed to become more and more creative, Fiore began shooting music videos within these Looking Back films showcasing his love for hip hop. Year after year he wrote, recorded, and mixed a verse that summed up the year.
